India’s commercial vehicle retail sales crossed the one-lakh mark for the first time in September, according to FADA data. Retail sales reached 1,03,557 units, registering a strong 37.62% year-on-year growth and 14.09% month-on-month growth over August.

The September 2026 performance was the best-ever September for the commercial vehicle segment. Rural CV retail increased 40.44% year on year, while urban markets recorded 35.15% growth. FADA linked the growth to GST 2.0 effects, replacement demand, infrastructure and mining activity, fleet purchases and the half-year-end buying cycle.

Heavy commercial vehicles recorded the strongest growth among the major CV categories. HCV retail reached 32,310 units in September, growing 46.22% year on year and 21.28% month on month.

LCV retail stood at 62,398 units, registering 34.13% year-on-year growth and 11.48% monthly growth. Medium commercial vehicle retail increased 33.96% year on year to 8,789 units.

The strong LCV performance indicates healthy demand for mini trucks and pickups, particularly for local freight, distribution and last-mile operations.

Trucks Continue to See Strong Demand

The growth in HCVs and infrastructure-linked activity supported demand for trucks. Mining, steel and cement movement, along with bulk fleet purchases, contributed to the September performance.

FADA also highlighted replacement demand and purchases ahead of expected October price increases as important factors supporting commercial vehicle retail.

Electric Commercial Vehicles Gain Share

Diesel remained the dominant fuel in September with an 80.76% share of CV retail. CNG/LPG accounted for 12.07%, while electric vehicles held a 4.04% share.

Although EV penetration was lower than August’s 5.18%, the September share was significantly higher than 2.16% recorded in September 2025. This continues to support the market for electric trucks and electric mini trucks.

Tata Motors Leads CV Retail

Tata Motors remained the largest CV retail player in September with 35,931 units and a 34.70% market share. The two Mahindra entries in the FADA data together recorded 27,677 and 25,669 units, while Ashok Leyland entries recorded 19,223 and 18,962 units.

For April-September FY2027, commercial vehicle retail reached 5,85,217 units, up 21.48% from 4,81,723 units in the same period of FY2026.

FADA expects commercial vehicle demand to remain supported by freight movement, infrastructure activity and the enquiry pipeline in October. However, price increases, OEM supply and weaker rainfall conditions in some regions remain key factors to watch.
